Niagara Power Generating Station Forebay Bridge Reconstruction
Location: Niagara Falls, ON
Client: Rankin Construction Inc./Niagara Parks Commission The reconstruction of the Canadian Niagara Power Forebay Bridge was completed with Rankin Construction as a design-build project. ELLIS Engineering Inc. completed the design for the reconstruction of the CNP Forebay Bridge, and also the rehabilitation and conversion of the adjacent Ice Bridge for pedestrian use. The existing five span stone arch structure was built circa1905 at the forebay of one of the first power stations in the world, near the brink of the Horseshoe Falls. An innovative approach was taken to build a new bridge superstructure, saving the 1905 stonework, and retaining the look of the original arched bridge. The new reinforced concrete deck was cast in place using the existing arches as formwork. The existing arched stonework was tied into the new concrete deck via ‘edge beams’. New architectural features, such as railings and light poles were provided to match the surroundings and nearby structures. |
